Please give a warm welcome to Ayla Pena:
“Hi, I’m Ayla Peña and I live on a little island in the beautiful province of British Columbia, Canada. The AYLA View offers wedding calligraphy and stationery design services inspired by nature, fine art, and all kinds of love. I’m thrilled to provide my offerings to wildly-in-love and discerning couples.”
How did you get into stationery?
“When I was younger, I didn’t think there was such a thing as a “creative career” path, as most of my friends seemed to go into fields like medicine and science. I was that kid who just wanted to make beautiful things that made sense. When I found out that this was possible, I pursued the fine arts and advertising design in university, falling head over heels for it.
Typography has always been my favourite area of design and the first time I used a calligraphy pen, I knew I found my “it”. Coming home from stressful day jobs that were not design-related, I looked forward to practicing calligraphy every night and appreciated how it forced me to slow down and enjoy the process. I refined my online portfolio to showcase my offerings and slowly, but surely, people started to find me, which is very exciting!”
What is your 'why'?
“I never really thought I’d be in the wedding industry, and yet I knew I wanted to make things that would inspire and connect others through my work. Being a sentimental person, nostalgia plays a part in my services. I’m hoping my creations evoke positive emotions, especially from the people I work with and their loved ones. My goal is to create exciting, tangible, and memorable keepsakes that one can look back on in the years to come.”

What was the pivotal moment when you decided to start your own business?
“I decided to go full-time last September at the same time we moved to a different city. It was the perfect opportunity especially since I also just acquired a letterpress. Soon enough, I hope to offer letterpress services as well, not only to wedding clients, but also to fellow creatives.”
What do you find to be the hardest thing about running your own business and what are you doing to manage this?
“As I’m very new to running my business full-time, I am working on my time management… Especially in the nicer months when all I want to do is go on adventures. Coincidentally, this is usually the busiest for wedding season. I like to plan my weeks ahead and schedule design blocks on my daily calendar. Having my website up and running, plus setting up systems that work keep me sane and more organized.
You wear lots of hats when you work for yourself, so it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. If something is not working for me, I take a step back and think things through first. I would take a break, go for a walk with my dog, do something else, and then come back to the project feeling refreshed. I’ve also
realized that it’s OK to ask for help, we’re all here to learn from each other!”
- What is your favorite stationery trend? “Letterpress on handmade paper, it can be tricky but it’s worth it!”
- Favorite sealing wax color? “Dusty Blue or Antique Gold”
- Favorite vacation spot? “Beaches, particularly in the Philippines.”
