In the Spotlight this week, we have the wonderful Liza Child from Liza Child Calligraphy and Design, and we are SO excited. Liza is not only a PRO Partner, but she is also part of our Creative Community! Her most recent wax seal design is the stunning “Bride To Be” design! Without further ado, here is our interview with Liza…
“Hello!! My name is Liza Child and I am originally from Bogota, Colombia. I am the owner, creative and designer behind Liza Child Calligraphy and Design. I currently reside in Vancouver, BC and have been loving it since moving here in 2009.”
Tell us a little bit about your business
“I run a creative studio dedicated to providing discerning, elegant and romantic stationery for weddings and sophisticated and modern branding for business owners. I have been devoted to all things stationery related since I can remember. It was one of my favourite things to collect with my dad. We would go to a store and pick our favourite pads and pens and write all our ideas, even if mine’s at that time were mainly doodles 🙂 but it was so much fun!
I graduated from a graphic design program back in Colombia, but took a Design Information course here in Langara College that I adored. I got to learn bits and pieces from architecture, interior design, visual merchandising, graphic design and marketing and it was truly then, when I discovered my love for seeing my creativity being used multiple ways!”
Spilling The Tea
What was the pivotal moment when you decided to start your own business?
“I had just left a job where I was unhappy and was looking for something I was truly passionate about. I felt that for a few years I had taken on opportunities that were great but not making me feel in cloud nine and I was desperate for that. I started discovering the wedding industry and dipping my toes, thanks to a good friend and amazing business owner who gave me a chance to plan weddings with her. I fell in love with this industry. Simultaneously I took calligraphy classes and practiced a lot and started posting it on IG and slowly getting more and more requests. In 2017 I registered my business and made it official and haven’t looked back ever since!”
What has been your biggest struggle or challenge to date? And how did you overcome it?
“Not knowing much about how to run a business, I think it’s the steepest curve I have had to learn ever. Learn how to set up your business structure, design your website, learn accounting, marketing, sales, etc. I learned that I had to take step by step and take each pillar of my business and slowly develop it and learn as I go. There is so much information online and so many mentors and other business owners willing to help and I am so grateful for that! I am still learning so much every day….”
A Day In The Life
What does your typical work day look like?
“Read a book that inspires me or go workout (yes sometimes it’s one or the other haha). Then breakfast and start looking at my calendar and agenda to organize my day. I alternate between creative work and emails and I like to batch work as I can easily distract myself. That way if I need to cut, print and assemble suites I can do it in a segment of my day and continue the next if need be.”
How do you maintain work-life balance?
“I try to not work on the weekends unless I absolutely have to, but sharing time with my husband, puppy, family and friends it’s needed for me to feel fulfilled and happy. So I make sure I do my best not to procrastinate and work on everything from Mon – Fri and leave weekends for being with them.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
“Time and energy are a valuable resource and we can’t wait for perfect, just go for it now!”
What is one of your proudest accomplishments?
“Being featured in beautiful publications like Wedding Sparrow. It was one of my dreams when I first started this business and when it happened it felt a little surreal!”
What is one of your biggest goals?
“Product line! I enjoyed the creation of my folios so much I am dying to create a product line for weddings all designed by me.”
What is one project that you worked on that you are still swooning over?
“Being part of the workshop by La musa de las flores in Vancouver! It was such a dream to see all of the most beautiful flowers all in one room ready for students to learn. I collaborated with:
Workshop – @lamusadelasflores
Hosting and assisting – @dafioridesign, @sweet_kvitka
Table styling @adelaidedesign
Dress @o_m_coutureVenue @settlementbuilding
MUAH @ anastasiiamay.art
- Apps/Tools that you can’t live without? Planoly, Dubsado and Instagram!
- How do you unwind after work? Spinning (doesn’t sound like unwinding haha but helps), I only started doing it a year ago and I love going to a class with friends!
- Hobby? Learning new things! I take classes every year of something different. I have learned flower arrangement, hip-hop, playing tennis. (not that I am good at any of these, but it’s so much fun).
